Family Planning Resources

Talking with your loved ones about changing their living situations is never easy, but here are some tips that might help.

As your parents are getting older, you may have noticed or they may have even mentioned that it's more difficult for them to keep up with household maintenance or chores such as cooking, cleaning, and laundry. It might be time to talk with them about their living arrangements.

Be Prepared

Make a list of concerns, whether they are home and yard maintenance, safety, security, finances, or just about their quality of life, it's important to be ready when you have this conversation. It's best to have this discussion in person, and it is a discussion, not a lecture. Your parents will ultimately be making their own decisions on where to live.

Environment Is Important

Where your parents choose to live affects how they live, mentally and physically. At Friendship Hill they can maintain their privacy in a safe and secure environment and be as socially active as they choose.

Give Your Parents Time

You may need to talk with your parents about moving to a senior living community more than once. And please don't expect them to make a life-changing decision after one conversation. Listen to their concerns as well.

Know the Options

Friendship Hill Retirement Center is a community for independent seniors ages 55 and over. We are not a nursing home, assisted living facility, or memory center. Our residents enjoy their independence while we take care of cooking, cleaning, and laundry. And although we don't have nurses on staff, we can provide transportation to doctor appointments if your parents are unable to drive. If they can drive, they can bring their car to Friendship Hill! We even have free parking.

Talking with Your Parents

Friendship Hill Retirement Center has created this resource for children to use when talking to parents about moving to an independent living community like ours.
